Disaster Alert is a free mobile app that provides critical hazard alerts and information to help users stay safe worldwide. Developed on PDC's DisasterAWARE platform, Disaster Alert offers near real-time updates on 18 different types of natural hazards across the globe.
With Disaster Alert, users can customize early warning alerts, access estimated impact reports, and view visualized modeled hazard data. The app continuously streams new information from reliable sources, ensuring up-to-date and scientifically verified alerts. In cases where no official source is available, the Pacific Disaster Center manually updates the alerts, minimizing the time gap between an event and the availability of information in the system.
Disaster Alert provides updates only for active hazards that have been designated as potentially hazardous to people, property, or assets by PDC. These include hurricanes (tropical cyclones/typhoons), earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanos, floods, wildfires, U.S. tornados, and winter storms automatically processed in near real-time. Additionally, the app manually processes marine hazards, storms, droughts, and manmade incidents. Hawaii users also receive high surf advisories, high winds, and flash flood alerts.
New features introduced in version 7.5.4 include:
- Default theme: The app now applies the PDC theme as the default theme. The PDC theme integrates DisasterAWARE branding, colors, and iconography. Users can select different themes from the User Preferences menu.
- Multi-language login and registration: Users can now log in and register in supported languages other than English. A dropdown selector allows users to change the language option.
- Onboarding: The app now includes a first-time user setup feature that allows customization of alert location and hazard severity. This screen appears for users updating from prior versions or new installations. Users can sign up, log in, or skip to use Disaster Alert as a guest. Alert preferences are customizable only for registered users.
- User registration email: Disaster Alert now supports additional email formats, including plus-addressed (sub-addressed) email formats, for new user registration forms.
Other key features of Disaster Alert include:
- Customizable alerts based on geographic area of interest and hazard severity.
- Map tip feature that provides estimated impact information when a hazard is selected on the map.
- Interactive map interface displaying 18 different types of active hazards.
- Customizable background maps.
- Map layers with overlays for population densities, global cloud coverage, and more.
